The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at The Aga Khan University is a dynamic academic centre which serves the diagnostic needs of the country through its clinical laboratory services that spreads across Pakistan. AKUH’s Clinical Laboratory is College of American Pathologists (CAP) accredited and caters to the need of the entire country through its tertiary lab at the main campus and 300+ specimen collection units and 13 stat labs across Pakistan. The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine consists of five major sections namely Chemical Pathology, Haematology and Transfusion Medicine, Histopathology, Microbiology, and Molecular Pathology. Each section is academically driven and is highly engaged in research and undergraduate, postgraduate teaching and training.
The Chemical Pathology laboratory services are provided on a well-equipped, highly advanced, and professionally run facility. Chemical Pathology encompasses a highly specialized domain focusing on the analysis of bodily fluids to diagnose and manage various disorders. The section includes highly trained personnel, including experienced pathologists and qualified technologists. Faculty members proficient in this field play a crucial role in guaranteeing precise diagnostics and optimal patient care. Their deep understanding of chemical pathology is indispensable for delivering comprehensive education and training to students and residents.

Notably, it stands as one of Pakistan's few centers offering an extensive menu of specialized esoteric tests for diagnosing rare and common metabolic disorders. The Section offers specialized and advanced testing services, encompassing amino acid chromatography, organic acid chromatography, immunofixation and electrophoresis, immunoassays, stone analysis via FTIR, as well as comprehensive programs such as newborn screening, toxicology, and therapeutic drug monitoring.
